Gary Smith's new book 'From Art to Landscape'

W. Gary Smith has authored an inspiring and personal account of his life creating art in the garden. In addition to being a personal account of his journey, this luminous story, published by Timber Press, makes the process almost seem easy. If not easy, it is always fun if Gary Smith is involved. Walking alongside Gary through the design process in his book ‘From Art to Landscape: Unleashing Creativity in Landscape Design’ is very similar to walking alongside him in an actual garden - eye opening at every step.

RBG Kew Staffers Visit SHR

Although it delayed their trip for a week and caused more than a few travel and schedule changes, the Icelandic volcano eruption this spring was woefully inadequate in keeping Katie Price and Lucy Hart, staff members from the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, London, from their planned expedition to the southern Appalachians.  Katie is Team Leader for the Alpine and Woodland Displays at Kew. Lucy is Team Leader for the Northern Gardens Unit, Hardy Display Section.

Toxaway Mountain or North Pole?

Toxaway Mountain - IcedThe Southern Highlands Reserve has been clothed in white since mid-December - not just clothed but downright clad, cloaked, draped, adorned, attired and bedecked with endless snow and ice. At least, we were not pantalooned or gowned, thank goodness - that would have been going just a little too far. We literally have not seen the bare ground in two months.

Focus 2010

After years of construction and garden building it is exciting to be making progress towards fulfilling our mission of celebrating the natural history of the southern Appalachian highlands through education, restoration and research.

The Spruce-Fir Forest, Icon of the Southern Blue Ridge Mountains

a forest in peril?A trip along the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is inspiring to say the least.  The long, breathtaking vistas across the high peaks forest, whether on a blue-bird clear day or through swirling fog and clouds, seem to present a picture of nature at its best. But, all is not as it seems.  It's not easy to see at first glance, but there are forces at work here that threaten this iconic forest.

Climate Change in the Southern Appalachian Mountains

It's pretty easy to have a winning stance on climate change. If there is one thing that never changes about the natural world it's that it is always changing. If only it were that simple. The controversy surrounding the global warming issue shows no sign of cooling off anytime soon.

SHR Begins Phenology Monitoring

In its simplest terms, phenology is collecting scientific data about the world around us and how it changes on a day-to-day basis.

Phenology can detect the pulse of the planet by measuring the pace of nature's clock. By recording data about the timing of natural events on a consistent and long-term basis, it is possible to accumulate information that will be valuable to researchers in the future regarding climate change.
