The YOUtopia Project
The Southern Highlands Reserve has taken the YOUtopia pledge and is committed to reducing our impact on climate change.
YOUtopia is a national program to elevate the leadership of APGA's 500 public garden members through a pledge to reduce their climate impact and engage and inspire their 80+ millions of annual visitors on climate change solutions. The Southern Highlands Reserve has taken the YOUtopia pledge and is committed to reducing our impact on climate change.
At SHR, we are committed to lead by example and illustrate how we are our garden's net climate impact when we communicate with our visitors. We actively educate and engage our visitors, volunteers, staff, and community in climate impacts and sustainable solutions by our participation in YOUtopia. We monitor how we are reducing climate change in the context of our water use, energy conservation, waste reduction and recycling, transportation, and material procurement. During our communication with visitors, we inform them of our strategies to reduce climate change, and encourage visitors to adopt similar practices at their home and organizations.
American Public Gardens Association (APGA) members are leaders dedicated to the conservation of, and education about the earth's flora and fauna. With more than 70 million annual visitors, APGA's 500+ member institutions are uniquely qualified to share science-based, non-partisan information and facilitate educational outreach that can engage visitors in sustainable solutions to climate change.
Climate change is one of the most critical threats to ecosystems, particularly as it pertains to biodiversity and resource sustainability. As civic and conservation leaders, public gardens have a responsibility, individually and collectively, to reduce climate impacts while motivating society to do the same. In recognition of these factors, Southern Highlands Reserve has pledged to reduce our climate impact and engage our visitors by implementing conservation education, and communication initiatives that increase the awareness, understanding, and action on climate solutions.
